November 30, 2014

posted Nov 26, 2014, 9:29 AM by Christine Rice

Flowers for today are provided by Sheila Johnson in honor of her daughter Kim’s birthday.

We want to thank all the folks at FLC for their generous support of our money-raising for  Bread for the World this year.  Total amount for 2014 (with assistance from Thrivent) is $1,000 - by far the most we have ever contributed.  We felt that the service last Sunday was extra-special.  "Bread" was in the hymns and the sermon.  Our church seems like a true supporter of Bread and its advocacy-centered activities on behalf of the
poor in our country and the world.
Outreach

Scandinavian Dinner: FREE tickets for the dinner are at the table in the fellowship hall TODAY, and next Sunday, if available (seating is limited).  The annual festive potluck will be Wednesday, December 10 at 5:30 p.m.  Please indicate on the sign-up easel the food item(s) you will be bringing.  There is also an opportunity to sign up to help in a variety of ways (on the same easel).  Please remember, if you take tickets and find later you are unable to attend, call the church office at 925-2844 so your tickets may be given to someone on the (possible) wait list.  Thank you!

“Jubilee:” All who are planning to participate our Christmas Program during the worship service on Dec. 14, please note the following rehearsal times:

Sunday, Dec. 7:   8:45 am in the sanctuary (before Advent Festival)

*Thursday, Dec. 11: 6:15 pm in the sanctuary

Sunday, Dec. 14: 8:45 in the sanctuary

* This is our only evening rehearsal.  It will be about 30-45 min. for the children/youth (choir stays longer).

Advent Festival—Sunday, Dec. 7:  After meeting in the sanctuary at 8:45 for a short practice for “Jubilee,” please come to the fellowship hall, where there will be crafts for the kids, a continental breakfast, and hot spiced cider.  All are invited—come celebrate the season of Advent!

Christmas is coming so it is time to start thinking about the Community Christmas Basket program. From now until December 7th we will be collecting donations for this community program. Thrivent will be matching up to $825. Indicate on your check or offering envelope “Christmas Basket” to make sure it gets there.

Tree of Love 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, Rotary-Library Plaza, Ellensburg Public Library, Third Avenue and Ruby Street, reception later at Hal Holmes Center. For more information: Call 509-962-7379 or go online to www.hospice-friends.org.

Severe Weather Shelter for Homeless: Kittitas Valley Ministerial Association is attempting to provide a severe weather shelter for homeless folks during the winter months. Our hope is that 7 churches in town would each host a night for 5-20 people (?). The people would be fed dinner and screened at our FISH Food Bank and then transported to the host church around 6:00p.m. They would spend the night at the church on mats & sleeping bags provided by FISH. The Food Bank would then pick them up at 7:30a.m. and bring them back to FISH for breakfast. Church Council has given approval and First Lutheran, along with First Christian, United Methodist and Thorp Community Church & Thorp Fire Station have committed to being host sites for one night. I checked with our insurance company and we will need 2 volunteers to spend the night, one of which needs to be a member of FLC. If you are willing to help me with this , please let me know. Pastor Dennis  (It looks like Thursday nights will be FLC’s host nights, starting December 4th.)

Stewardship UPDATE for 2015 –Stewardship is Love of God at First Lutheran. Thank You. We have received 72 Time and Talent surveys so far during this year Stewardship annual pledging! There are still some of us that have not yet completed the forms so if you need one please get one from the church office or ask one of the stewardship team members for a copy and place it in the basket in the church office. As of Financial Pledge Sunday November 16th we have only received 16 pledge commitments for 2015. Please return your form either in the mail, drop it by the church office or place it in the offering plate. We do not open these envelopes and they represent your act of worshipping God and giving thanks for the blessings God has bestowed upon you. Giving back from your “first fruits” and working to become a tithing Christian is how we show that God is at work guiding our lives in His name.

Matthew 22:37  He said to him, "'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.' 38 This is the greatest and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'
