March 2017

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Whew! It’s been quite a winter!  This has been the most winter I have seen in my 13 and a half years here.  I know winter does not officially end until March 20th, but I hope the white stuff will be mostly gone by the time you read this.

Lent.  Throughout the month of March we are in the season of Lent, beginning with Ash Wednesday on March 1st.  Lent comes from an old word meaning “lengthen.”  The days are lengthening now.  We are all really looking forward to spring time and longer warmer days this year!

Spiritually, Lent is the 40 days before Easter, not including Sundays, in which we walk with our Savior Jesus to his cross and grave.  The 40 days of Lent correspond to the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness being tempted by the devil.  Lent is a time to intentionally deepen our relationship with God through prayer, worship, fasting, Bible study, and helping our neighbors in need.

Many people do spring cleaning in their homes and yards in March.  Lent is spiritual house cleaning time for Christians.  We think on and give great thanks for Jesus and his willingness to die a painful and humiliating death on the cross to forgive our sins and the sins of the whole world.  On Good Friday we exclaim, “Behold, the life giving cross on which was hung the salvation of the whole world!”  God chooses to save the whole world through the apparently weak and foolish cross of his Son Jesus.

And then having walked with Jesus to the foolish wisdom of his cross, we shall be able to truly celebrate and give thanks to God for Jesus’ resurrection on Easter Sunday.  By his death Jesus has destroyed death and by his rising Jesus has opened the door to new and everlasting life for all believers.

This is the costly grace of God, which we embrace during the season of Lent.

Serving God and neighbor together with you,

Pastor Dennis
