September 2014

Dear People of God,

It’s been kind of a hot, windy and at times smoky summer this year.  We give thanks for all the firefighters who battled the blazes near us and we pray for the safety of those who continue to do so.  As much as I love the warm sunshine of summer, I am looking forward to cooler temperatures in September.

The month of September always brings changes.  A big change of course is “back to school” for kids.  For Cathy and me, a big change in our home will be when our Son Kyle heads off to college at Eastern WA University.  Cheney is less than 3 hours away, but Kyle will no longer be living under our roof for most of the year.  So that will be a big change at our house.  Life is change. As the good book says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and today and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8)  Yet Jesus asks us to adapt his saving good news of love, forgiveness and mercy to better reach people in our modern times.

I hope you found some time this summer for rest and recreation.  enjoyed hiking and backpacking in our Cascade Mountains, doing some kayaking with my brother and visiting family.  My personal thanks goes out to Pastor Mary Johnson and Pastor Ginny Krekling for preaching, leading worship and covering emergencies while I was on vacation.  Thanks also to Frank Swanson for leading the Thursday Bible study and to Christine and Carla for keeping things running smoothly at First Lutheran.

Many activities start up again in September.  Sunday School and Adult Education start September 21st, Confirmation starts Sept 10th, preschool and quilters start September 3rd.  These are just some of the ministries of First Lutheran Church where we can grow in God’s Word, in Christian community and in service to others.

See you in worship!

Pastor Dennis
