September 2016

Dear People of God,

The evening breeze: I really look forward to that evening breeze as I write this during a long hot spell in August.  I have a love/hate relationship with our wind/breeze here in Ellensburg.  I suspect many of you do, too.  I do not enjoy the 35 mph cold winds of March, April and May (sometimes even June).  But on 90 plus degree days in July and August, the evening breeze is delightful.  It immediately starts to cool things off.  I can open up the house windows and let the refreshing breeze blow through.  It’s finally cool enough for Kyle and I to take our dog Buddy for a walk.

The evening breeze reminded me of that verse in Genesis 3:8—“They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze…”  Perhaps you know that the second half of that verse mentions the man and his wife hiding themselves because they had disobeyed God and eaten the forbidden fruit.  But I just want to concentrate on the first half of the verse with the Lord God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze.  What a wonderful description of God enjoying a walk in his garden, with all his plants and animals and humans in the cooling evening breeze.  I often water the lawn and flowers and putter in the garden in the evening breeze.  It’s fun and comforting to picture the Lord God strolling along beside me.  Perhaps your mind jumps, as mine does, to that hymn “In the Garden”:  “And he walks with me and he talks with me and he tells me I am his own.”  This is especially true since our Savior Jesus has died and risen again and has promised to be with us always.

I pray that you have had some time this summer to enjoy the evening breezes along with the warm summer days. I always like to point out that in Hebrew and in Greek the same word is used for Spirit/wind/breathe.  I know that summer can mean hard hot work for folks who labor outside, but I pray you found a little time for some R & R.

The month of September always brings cooler weather and big changes.  For students and teachers it is, of course, back to school time.  September brings schedule changes in the church too.  Sunday School and adult education start back up.  Confirmation classes resume and the choir starts practicing the end of the month.  The quilters have been working steady all summer, but more hands join this good work in September.

Let me say a big thank you to Christine and Carla for keeping everything going while I was away on vacation.  Thank you also to Doug Fessler, Mary Johnson and Ethan Bergman for preaching and leading worship.  And thanks to everyone who cares for our building and to our wonderful gardeners for keeping the grounds beautiful.

May you be filled with the Spirit of the Living God as the evening breezes blow.

Peace in Christ,

Pastor Dennis
