Just for fun in the garden: If you look just outside Pastor’s window, you will see a type of plant that may have given shade to Jonah. Jonah 6 says “The Lord God appointed a bush and made it come up over Jonah, to give shade over his head, to save him from his discomfort.” The Hebrew word translated as bush is Qiqayon—possibly the castor bean plant. Look for the big furry red blossoms and broad leaves. Our castor bean, planted by Ida Malde, really grew fast in the summer sun.

St Andrew’s Catholic Church 401 S Willow St, is hosting their annual October Festival Thursday, October 6th from 10-3. Crafts Unlimited has been working on items for the Craft shop. Local gardeners have been gathering their produce and bakers have been preparing their homemade goodies. There is a raffle for a queen size quilt, afghan and an American Girl doll with clothes. And don’t forget about the great $5 lunch of soup, bread and pie.

Youth Sunday School Help Needed Between October and March, the Youth Sunday School class needs teachers. Whether it is for one class or many, your help is meaningful. We have a video-based curriculum, a room with a donut supply, and help as you want it. Whether you’ve never taught before or are a seasoned master, the important thing is being present and engaged with our Youth. A signup sheet with topics is on the Youth board. If you want more information (and encouragement), talk with Carla or Joe. (And if you do take a Sunday or two, both Joe and Carla will be able to help with supplies, guidance, and affirmation.) If you don’t think you can do it alone, recruit a friend to help. Classes start (promptly-ish) at 9:00 am and conclude by 9:45 a.m.

Cold Weather Shelter Training Thurs Oct 6 ~ 7:00 pm The month of November is rapidly approaching and First Lutheran again plans to host a cold weather shelter on Thursday nights, 7pm to 7am, November through February, for our homeless population. Other churches in town will also take a night of hosting the shelter. A training session will be offered here at FLC on Thurs Oct 6 at 7pm. This will be a good time to ask questions and refresh ourselves on the do’s and don’ts of working with homeless people, reviewing the shelter rules, the check-in and screening procedures, the volunteer sign up procedure and other things. First Lutheran’s first night of hosting the shelter in our gym will be Thurs. Nov 3rd. We will need folks from FLC, as well as the community, to work the 7pm to 10pm shift, the 10pm to 6am shift, and the 6-7am shift. Thank you for caring about the homeless poor in Kittitas County.

Updating our Constitution and Bylaws Sunday October 9th after worship As a member congregation of the ELCA, we need to bring our constitution in line with the ELCA model constitution. We held a Q & A session on Sunday, Sept. 25, and we plan to vote on the new constitution & Bylaws on Sunday, Oct. 9 after worship. We need all voting members of First Lutheran there. (If you are an adult or a confirmed youth, you are a voting member.) Printed copies of the new constitution are available (and it’s on our FLC website www.flc-eburg.org) If folks feel like they need more time to consider this, we will simply delay the vote until our annual meeting the end of January.

Thank you to all who helped out at our annual rummage sale on Friday and Saturday. It couldn’t be done without you!

The roof is done! (Well the half of the flat roof we are doing this year is done!) Materials were delivered on August 30th and work happened September 6-9th. Huge thanks to you who have already given generously to the $22,304.16 project. So far $18,213.00 has come in (there’s still plenty of room at the table for your gift if you have not done so already).
