May 2022
Christ is risen! He is risen indeed!
During the whole month of May we are still in “Eastertide” or the Easter Season. The resurrection of Jesus is the best news ever and too awesome to be limited to one day a year, So in the church we celebrate the resurrection of our Savior Jesus for a full 7 weeks: a week of weeks: 49 days: clear up until Pentecost (June 5th this year).
During the Easter Season, we hear of the risen Jesus showing himself to his disciples. The risen Jesus shows himself to Mary Magdalene at the empty tomb. The risen Jesus shows himself to Thomas and the other disciples behind the locked door. The risen Jesus gives a miraculous catch of fish to Peter and 6 other disciples and cooks breakfast for them on the beach. The risen Jesus is everywhere.
On May 26th, 40 days after Jesus’ resurrection, we celebrate Ascension Day. The risen Jesus ascends into heaven. The Son of God returns to his rightful place at the right hand of God: the place from which he came before he took on human flesh. Jesus “ascended” and yet he promises, “I am with you always.” (Matthew 28:20)
And let us not forget our wonderful mothers on Mother’s Day! On Sunday May 8th, we honor and give thanks for our loving mothers. Let’s be honest. Most of us learned what love is through our mothers. God bless you Moms as you reflect God’s love to your children!
Plus, by Mother’s Day it’s (usually) safe to plant flowers and gardens, since we are past the frost danger. God’s good creation is resilient and beautiful. As I write this on April 12th, the red and yellow daffodils are pushing up through fresh snow!
I’m sure May will be warmer than April. Maybe I can return to wearing only one pair of wool socks instead of two. Resurrection freedom to me always feels like being able to get by with less layers of clothing!
Of course we continue to pray for the people of Ukraine. The brutal atrocities committed by Putin’s army are horrific. We pray that civilians will be protected and refugees taken care of. We pray that peace will prevail and the war will end. We pray that the kingdom of God, the peaceful loving reign of God will spread over Ukraine, Russia, Yemen, Ethiopia, and wherever there is conflict and violence. Thy Kingdom come, O Lord, on earth as it is in heaven.
Christ is risen! He is risen indeed!
